Teach Us to Pray: Learning to Pray Like Jesus

This past Sunday, Pastor Ryan Albaugh delivered a powerful and practical message on prayer, diving into what it means to pray like Jesus. Many of us struggle with prayer—whether it feels like a chore, a mystery, or something we’re just not good at. Some worry about saying the wrong thing, while others feel unsure if God even hears them.

But as Pastor Ryan reminded us, prayer isn’t about getting the words perfect. It’s about relationship. It’s a conversation with a loving Father who desires to hear from us.

Jesus, Teach Us to Pray

In Luke 11:1, the disciples didn’t ask Jesus, “Teach us to preach” or “Teach us to perform miracles.” Instead, they asked, “Lord, teach us to pray.” Why? Because they saw how central prayer was to His life. Jesus wasn’t just someone who prayed—He was someone whose life was built on prayer.

Through the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus shows us that prayer is:
Relational – We approach God as our Father.
Missional – We align our hearts with His kingdom.
Dependent – We trust Him to provide for our needs.
Forgiving – We extend and receive grace through prayer.

Jesus also taught about persistence in prayer, reminding us that God is not reluctant to respond—He is generous and loving, eager to hear and answer when we call.

How’s Your Prayer Life?

Pastor Ryan challenged us to reflect on how prayer shapes our relationship with God. Is it something we do out of habit, or is it something that truly connects us with Him? He shared the story of Teresa of Ávila, a nun whose prayer life transformed not just her own faith but her entire community. Her story reminds us that it’s never too late to deepen our prayer life.

If prayer has felt distant, overwhelming, or just routine, the invitation is clear: Come back to prayer. Knock on the door. God is listening.

Let’s Be a Church That Prays

As a church, we’re committed to growing in prayer together. One way we do this is through our weekly all-church prayer calls—simple, powerful moments where we seek God together. We’re also stepping into bold new ministry opportunities with Communities on Mission, and we know that without prayer, we cannot move forward in God’s strength.

So, will you join us? Will you take the step to pray boldly, persistently, and expectantly?

Let’s be a church that prays like Jesus—because when we seek Him, He always answers.

Questions:

1. What if prayer became the first thing you turned to instead of the last resort?

2. How different would our church, our families, and our community look if we truly committed to praying like Jesus?
