Hearts of Stone 6: What Kind of Soil Are You? | Matthew 13:1–23
This past Sunday at WatsNaz, we closed out our Hearts of Stone series with a powerful message from Pastor Bruno on Palm Sunday. Over the past six weeks of Lent, we’ve been journeying together as a faith community in Watsonville, asking God to soften and transform our hearts. This final message brought that journey to a meaningful close.
Preaching from Matthew 13:1–23, Pastor Bruno led us through Jesus’ Parable of the Sower, where the seed of God’s Word falls on four different types of soil—each one representing the condition of our hearts. Some hearts are hard and unreceptive, others are shallow, some are crowded and distracted, and some are soft and ready to bear fruit.
As we marked the beginning of Holy Week, we were invited to consider: What kind of soil is my heart? Am I truly listening to God’s Word, or just hearing it? Am I open to transformation, or too distracted by life’s worries to let the seed take root?
One powerful reminder from the message came from biblical scholar David Brown: “The effect of the Word is dependent on the condition of the heart.” The Gospel—the message of the Kingdom—is good and life-giving. But how it grows in us depends entirely on how ready our hearts are to receive it.
